10 Mexican Restaurants In Lexington To Try For Cinco De Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! 

Until writing this blog, I, admittedly, represented the majority of the white American population in that I knew very little about Mexican culture or the meaning behind Cinco de Mayo. Today, I decided to change that. I adore Mexican food, and any Mexican holiday, regardless of what it celebrates, is good enough for me to use as an excuse to go out to eat, but I felt it would be more respectful of me to take the time to learn the meaning behind the holiday itself. A quick Google search later, and I discovered that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the unlikely victory of the Mexican forces against the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. What caused the Mexicans and the French to fight?  A civil war had recently imposed great hardship for the Mexican economy, and the French, lead by Napoleon III, saw this as an opportunity to take control and set up a puppet regime in Mexico. The people of Mexico, of course, took issue with this, so, on May 5, their greatly outnumbered, out-gunned forces clashed with the approaching French forces, resulting in an unlikely victory when the French leader made several miscalculations, including attacking too late in the day, attacking from the wrong direction, and not taking into account the daily rains that fell in that area. Cinco de Mayo is now celebrated in Mexico with parades reenactments, and in the United States, it has become associated with a celebration of Mexican culture.

Now, with our history lesson out of the way, check out a short list of some great Mexican restaurants in this city that will allow you to celebrate Battle of Puebla! And also eat great food. Because honestly, which one is more exciting to you personally? 

1. Maria's Kitchen 

This is one I've never tried, but I've heard it's the most authentic Mexican food in all of Lexington.

3. The Local Taco 

This counts as Mexican...right? Regardless, the Local Taco has some of the best tacos in town, even if they're not traditional fare.
